Galerie 91, The Hague, May 2012
This exhibition has been created to mark a personal change of perspective and the paintings displayed here are representative of recent work whilst continuing in the function of Head teacher at The British School in The Netherlands.
As we grow older it is not uncommon to begin to see the world and our role in it from different points of view. One’s perspective can change gradually over time or by sudden events or as the philosopher, Ludwig Wittgenstein might say, by the dawning of an aspect. I have always been fascinated by paintings. I am a life long learner. Painting and paintings have become the defining passion of my life. Every new painting project brings with it new challenges, insights and an invigorating experience of a sense of creative and worthwhile purpose. Each painting is unique and the result of countless hours of reflection and study, flashes of inspiration, careful execution and above all a commitment to create an object worthy of contemplation and long term enjoyment.
The origin of the idea for a painting can come from a number of different sources. The commissioned work is as a result of discussion and the sharing of expectations and aspirations. Sometimes an idea lingers in my head for months whilst at other times I am immediately inspired by a place or experience and begin right away.
The time has come to devote my energies to the pursuit of my passion for painting. This exhibition is a celebration of that moment in time. I am happy to consider any thoughts for commissions. I hope you enjoy the exhibition.
